Gardiner has long been inspired by the landscape of the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. Firmly rooted in the tradition of modern English landscape painting, he has remained responsive to his experiences and memories of the region. His evocative paintings blur the lines between representation and abstraction. Layers of colour convey sensations, changes in the weather and seasons as Gardiner observes the landscape. Gardiner's working methods - scouring, building accretions of paint, collaging, sanding down, graffiti marking - echo the history of these ancient landscapes and their complex layers built up over centuries.
