The godfather of British pop art was born in Dartford, Kent, in 1932.

Blake later taught at St Martin's School of Art (1960 - 62), Harrow School of Art (1960 - 63), Walthamstow School of Art (1961 - 64) and the Royal College of Art (1964 - 76) where he met the musician Ian Dury, who remained a friend throughout his life. (Blake designed the sleeve for the Ian Dury tribute album Brand New Boots and Panties in 2001.)

During the 1960s, Blake won international fame as one of the leading exponents of the British Pop Art movement, and  his acclaim and international reputation have continued to grow ever since.
Blake's images are born from a love affair with the icons and ephemera of popular culture, for example Origins of Pop III and Origins of Pop IV, (see below). His influence on the music world can be seen in the seminal cover art for the Beatle's Sergeant Pepper, The Who's Face Dances (1981), Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas  (1984) and Paul Weller's Stanley Road (1995 ).

Blake was made a Royal Academician in 1981, a CBE in 1983 and in 2002 he was knighted.

The Paris Suite 

Following the massive success fo the Venice Suite, we are delighted to announce the release fo the Paris Suite: Eiffel Tower, Four Man Up, Birds, Dancing - Place de la Concorde.  In the same whimsical and comedic style in which Blake evoked the canals of Venice, he now guides us through the city of light.  Blake again creates his compositions through collage, running the full gamut from the delicate sentimentality of Eiffel Tower to the joyously absurd sight of the Opera Garnier under the weight of an ornithological olverload in Birds.

Though these images are packed full of unexpected and out of place content, Blake somehow captures the essence of Paris, that joie de vivre aned spirit of bohemisnism and surrealism that prevades the air.

Marilyn Monroe, Black

This silscreen print is based on a 1990 original of the same name (photogrpahs and enamel paint on wood) that Blake created for a series: In Homage To Marilyn Monroe. Blake has taken the opportunity in the silkscreen to both lighten the band of colour (which is a dark purple in the early work) and to add diamond dust to Mariln's jewellery (the detail on her diamond bracelet).

Unusually for a composition inspired by his pop art period, black is the colour that dominates. Indeed the only relief from wha would otherwise be an entirely monochromatic piece is a violet band underneath the triple image of the actress.

ON THE BEACH

On The Beach seeks to capture all the activities that we associate with a visit to the seaside: swimming, messing around in boats, fishing, paddling, sunbathing, donkey rides and so on. However, Blake contrasts these familiar ideas with unexpected images of African and Australian tribal life, or an erotic glimpse of the naked female form. The combination of retro imagery and a radical surrealistic composition makes On The Beach a truly modern piece.

THE VENICE SUITE

Below are 3 limited edition silkscreens which are available as either part of the Venice Suite or individually from this exhibiton. Blake uses one of his favourite techniques to create the composition. He gathers visual material from varying sources such as Victorian postcards, old photographs, zoological illustrations, images from artworks or magazines, and arranges these over a simple background. This collage technique is one he also used to great effect in his recent Venice Suite, it gives the works a surreal twist and provides the viewer with a feast of detail for the eye.
